Bio
Varga joined the Hungarian Social Democratic Party in 1906 and wrote on economics for its press. In the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919 he served as finance commissar and then headed the Supreme Council of the National Economy. His June 1919 report, reproduced in L’Ordine Nuovo, examines workers’ control, technical management, bureaucracy and declining output. After the regime’s defeat he emigrated through Austria and settled in Soviet Russia in 1920, contributing economic analysis to the Communist International. He subsequently became a leading Soviet specialist on capitalist economies.

Other Notes
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences gives 7 October 1964 as the death date; Munzinger gives 8 October. The Academy’s date is followed here. High economic office and participation in a councils congress do not by themselves establish a specific elected factory-council mandate.
