Bio: Sorel was a French social theorist associated with revolutionary syndicalism. His writings examined working-class organization and criticized parliamentary socialism. In the letter reproduced by L’Ordine Nuovo in November 1919, he explained his sympathy for soviets while distinguishing Russia’s wartime circumstances from their possible normal functions. He refused to promise that the new institutions would succeed and emphasized observation and interpretation over a finished blueprint.
