Bio: Trotsky worked in revolutionary journalism and political organization during exile before returning to Russia in 1917. He chaired the Petrograd Soviet and helped direct the October insurrection, then served as foreign-affairs commissar and led the Soviet delegation at Brest-Litovsk. During the civil war he directed the Red Army as military and naval commissar. In the 1920s he became a leading opponent of Stalin’s consolidation of power; he was expelled from the party in 1927, exiled abroad in 1929 and murdered in Mexico in 1940.
