- Bio
- Gorky had long supported Russian revolutionary causes while maintaining an independent position as a writer. He criticized Bolshevik repression in 1917–1918 and worked to support writers and scholars during the subsequent crisis. In 1921 he left Russia for a period abroad in Germany and Italy. The short quotation in Issue I.4 condemns capitalist society but does not by itself establish his position on every Bolshevik policy.

- Other Notes
- Political relationships changed over time; support for revolutionary causes is not treated as proof of formal party membership or a council mandate. Issue I.19 adds a full three-part contribution, explicitly dated December 1917 by its editorial introduction. It distinguishes Gorky’s opposition to Bolshevik methods from his defense of the people involved and their role in awakening popular political interest. The accompanying portrait is credited to Ivan Lebedeff, not Gorky.
